Pema and her mother live in desperate poverty in rural Qinghai. And like thousands of other 13-year-old girls just like her, she is at risk of becoming pregnant as a teenager, exposed to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS or - even worse - one day, she might simply disappear. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Last year, Pema’s mother attended Captivating’s Healthy Village Program where she received a much needed health examination, medicines, hygiene products and important training about life-saving information such as basic hygiene, protected sex, and preventing STDs and HIV/AIDs. And then she came home and shared that information with her daughter. CHANGE starts with information and knowledge and is the first line of defense in keeping girls like Pema out of harm’s way. By donating just RMB 500, 5 more families just like Pema and her mother will be able to attend Captivating’s next Healthy Village Program.

You will receive update blogs about the program.

A dream I didn’t dare to dream

Right now, the Captivating Healthy Village Project is visiting remote villages and communities through Western China. This project is two-fold; 1) Much needed medical help is brought to these poor, remote locations, 2) Single mothers trapped in poverty and girls who are no longer in school are being discovered. This brings a wonderful opportunity to help in an even greater capacity. Below is a story of one mother who received greater help than she even dared to dream.

This single mother is 49 years old with two children. She has been sick for years without medical treatment. The medical information, health check and medicine that she was able to receive brought huge relief to her struggling little family. But this day was about to get a whole lot brighter for this mother. You see, her son dropped school when she got very sick. Now he is 18 years old and working hard to provide for his mother and sister. Her daughter dropped school in grade 8 when her husband passed away in an accident. Her dream for her children is the same as all mothers – she wants to see them have a bright future. Her daughter qualified for the Captivating Vocational School Scholarship Project and is currently being interviewed. If everything goes to plan, she will have the opportunity to go back to school in September 2019. “It was a dream I didn’t dare to dream. I didn’t think it would ever be possible for my daughter to finish school. Thank you”, she said through her tears.

Because of the Healthy Village Project, girls who have had to drop school because of poverty are given the opportunity to go back to school, learn a vocation and set themselves on the path to a bright future.

Thank you for coming to my village

Over 100 villagers attended the Healthy Village program held in their village last week. All who attended learned about various diseases and ways to prevent health concerns. Over 96 women received health checks and medicines. For many of these 96 women, this was their first medical check. Kamogal was one of the women who attended.

Kamogal, 48 years old and a single mother to her 19 year old son. She has never been to school and neither has her son. They have been struggling to make a life and farming has been the only source of income for them. She has been sick for long time and has only been able to visit a doctor once for some treatment because they can’t afford the medical costs. “I have been very sick but could not buy medicine because a month’s worth of medicine costs over RMB 320 [US$46] monthly and I can not afford that.” Kamogal learned some tips and health practices to implement in her daily life that will improve her health. “Thank you so much for coming to my village. I am confident that my health will start to improve because of the things that I have learned.”

Thank you to ASB Ventures and those who donated at the 10th Annual Captivating Charity Auction in Shenzhen for supporting the Healthy Village Project.

Health checks, medicine and health training help 140 women

The Captivating Healthy Village program has come to another remote, nomadic region in the highlands of Western China. 140 women and 60 men participated in the two day program which was divided up into 3 parts.

Training was conducted by the doctor. This included information on various STDs, Pre and Post Natal Health, Women’s Health and healthy habits to keep their children safe and healthy. Many of the nomadic families had not heard of these diseases or ways to prevent them. They were eager to learn ways to improve their health and the health of their families.
Each participant received a personal consultation with the doctor. For many women this was their first doctor consultation with many conveying they had been suffering from women’s health issues for many years. There were some women who had serious health concerns so arrangements were made for further visits with the doctor.
Medicine and hygiene supplies were handed out to each participant. These were eagerly received with grateful hearts.
One of the women who participated in the program was a 41 year old single mother with three children. This woman was illiterate, had never been to school and spent her days taking care of her sick mother. She has spent her years taking care of her three children and her mother and had not paid attention to her health. She had never been to a doctor before. The Captivating Healthy Village program provided this woman with her very first medical checkup. During this checkup with the doctor, it was discovered that she has serious liver problems. She was provided with three months supply of medicine and specific information regarding liver health care.

Thank you to the Li & Fung Foundation for your support of this township program. You have helped create a healthier future for 200 people and their families. This is one of ten (10) Healthy Village Township programs supported by Captivating and implemented by our amazing Qinghai registered charity partner – Shamtse Charity.
